Active Release Technique

Where assessment and treatment come together

Active Release Technique at SANO Physio, Paddington.

The science behind the ART

As the name suggests, Active Release Technique (ART) is a treatment that involves input from both you and your physio. Used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal issues and improve performance, it targets specific areas where you may feel tension, pain and reduced range of motion.

Based on the theory that scar tissue can build up in your muscles, tendons, fascia and ligaments from overuse and injury, A.R.T uses a combination of applied pressure and movement to break down the scar tissue and restore function. Your physiotherapist will find ‘tight’ points, apply pressure and ask you to move your body to lengthen the muscle while while pressure is maintained.

A chiropractor performs a chiropractic adjustment on a woman lying face down on a treatment table in a clinic.

When is ART used?

Active Release Technique may be recommended in your physiotherapy treatment plan. ART can help with a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Muscle Strains and Sprains

  • Tendinitis

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Headaches

  • Back Pain

  • Sciatica

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Beyond injury, ART can help performance through aiding full range of motion and restoring full function and performance to affected soft tissues. This process can result in significant increases in sports performance of power, strength, and flexibility.
